This blog is to chronicle the adventures and misadventures of Hollie and Emerson's bicycle tour across the 'ole USA. Via the southernmost route, Fall 2011. We're armed with good whiskey and a love of cornbread. While many others have ridden this route, I have a sneaky suspicion that it will not be quite the same as anyone else's ride....

Welcome to Gila Hot Springs
The Gila Wilderness Area was designated the nations first wilderness area in 1924. it is an isolated tract of land surrounded by Gila National Forest. Leaving this area fairly uncivilized and immensely beautiful. An almost mystical place that has kept families here for generations and in the same made repeat guests of visitors. It is the headwaters for the Gila River that travels the entire state of Arizona, and is a tributary of the Colorado River. The Mountains in this area are volcanic in origin and are a "haven for hot springs". This area is geologically relatively young in its formations and there is still much to be explored and discovered.
